Healthy Homes Weekly: Simple Ways to Feel Better Where You Live

There’s a moment in spring when everything shifts—windows crack open a little wider, the air smells cleaner, and suddenly your home feels like it wants to breathe again. This is the season of lightening up: clearing surfaces, swapping heavy meals for fresh ones, and leaning into routines that feel just a bit easier.

This week is all about that reset.

Start small at home. Open the windows—even for just 10 minutes—and let fresh air circulate. Wipe down the spots you’ve been ignoring all winter (light switches, cabinet pulls, that one shelf that collects everything). If you’re up for it, rotate in lighter fabrics—throws, pillow covers, even your bedding. It’s less about a full overhaul and more about creating a subtle shift in how your space feels.

And then there’s the kitchen, which tends to follow suit this time of year. Heavier comfort foods naturally give way to meals that are brighter, quicker, and full of color.

One of the easiest ways to step into spring cooking is with something simple, fresh, and flexible:

Spring Lemon & Herb Chickpea Salad

This is the kind of recipe you can pull together without thinking too hard—and it somehow tastes like you put in more effort than you did.

Ingredients:

  • 1 can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1 cup chopped cucumber
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • ¼ cup red onion, finely chopped
  • A handful of fresh parsley (or whatever herbs you have)
  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon
  • 2–3 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: crumbled feta or sliced avocado

Directions:
Toss everything together in a bowl and let it sit for 10–15 minutes, allowing the flavors to combine. That’s it.

It works on its own, over greens, or alongside grilled chicken or fish. It also holds up well in the fridge, making it an easy grab during a busy week.

There’s something about meals like this—simple, fresh, a little improvised—that mirrors what we’re often trying to create at home this time of year. Less heaviness, more ease.

If you do one thing this week, let it be something small that makes your space feel lighter. Open a window. Clear a surface. Make something fresh.

It doesn’t have to be a big reset to feel like a new season.
